Functional Incontinence
Urine loss caused by factors outside the lower urinary tract such as chronic impairments of physical and/or cognitive functioning
CHARACTERISTICS
  • Voiding at inappropriate times
  • Usually loss of full bladder volume
  • Normal muscle and sphincter function
USUAL CAUSES
  • Impaired mental status, (for example, Alzheimer's disease, retardation, closed head injury, emotional illness)
  • Unfamiliar environment
  • Inaccessible bathroom facilities
  • Disorientation of patient, behaviourial issues
  • Unresponsive to carers
  • Reduced communication skills
