What is an ileostomy?
An ileostomy is a surgically created opening into the small intestine through the abdomen. The purpose of an ileostomy is to allow stool to bypass the colon. |

| An ileostomy may be temporary or permanent, depending on the medical reason for the surgery. Because of diseasesuch as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's Diseasethe colon may be surgically removed, along with the rectum and anus. |
