- Voiding at inappropriate times
- Usually loss of full bladder volume
- Normal muscle and sphincter function

- Impaired mental status, (for example, Alzheimer's disease, retardation, closed head injury, emotional illness)
- Unfamiliar environment
- Inaccessible bathroom facilities
- Disorientation of patient, behaviourial issues
- Unresponsive to carers
- Reduced communication skills
