Spina Bifida
Spina bifida is the most common type of disabling birth defect. It affects about 70,000 Americans. Spina bifida is basically a defect of the spinal column that results from the failure of the spine to close properly before birth. The brain and the spinal cord, which make up the central nervous system, are affected in a variety of ways.
Children with spina bifida frequently have a neurogenic bladder due to damage to the nerves that control these organs. Sensation, voluntary emptying, and coordination may all be affected. Some people with spina bifida need to perform intermittent catheterization, take medications, or have surgical procedures such as bladder augmentation.
