Spina Bifida
The most common type of disabling birth defect, Spina Bifida affects about 70,000 Americans. Spina Bifida results from failure of the spinal column to completely close prior to birth. Bladder problems are common, and some people with Spina Bifida need to perform intermittent catheterization, take medications, or have surgical procedures such as bladder augmentation.
With Spina Bifida, the urethra may be particularly sensitive. If so, a hydrophilic catheter is recommended. When activated by water, the coating on hydrophilic catheters becomes extremely slippery. When combined with the highly flexible nature of silicone, these catheters are gentle and flexible.
